LUMBAR STEROID EPIDURAL INJECTIONS POST PRECEDURE INSTRUCTIONS

 

Call the Dr. if any of the following occur:

Headache which increases when standing and disappears when lying down.

Profound weakness of legs, greater than before.

Profound numbness of legs, greater than before.

Temperature greater than 101 F with back pain or neck stiffness.

Drainage, swelling, or redness that persists at injection site.

Post Epidural Instructions:

Remove band-aid in 24-48 hours; do not be alarmed if there is a small amount of blood on the band-aid.

If localized back pain exists during the first 24 hours after the block, apply ice pack every 4-6 hours for approximately 20 minutes, for 1-2 days.

If pain or discomfort persists after 2 days, apply warm compress every 4-6 hours for approximately 20 minutes.

NON-ASPIRIN analgesics can be taken for pain, as directed (ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Acetaminophen, Tylenol).

Avoid the following:

All aspirin and aspirin-containing compounds.

Hot baths and jacuzzis 1-2 days after injection (showers are ok).

Abrupt increases in activity levels.
